Jai Row Kavi didn’t set out to become a musician. Straight out of school, with time on his hands, he signed up for drum classes at a local music school where his friend was already learning to play the guitar. It wasn’t until he met friend and mentor Gino Banks who took him under his wing, that things started to fall in place and the possibility of making it his career began to set in.
Over the next two years he made a name for himself in the music scene by playing and recording with a number of local Rock and Heavy Metal bands (Medusa, Pin Drop Violence, Helga’s Funk Castle etc) He then took a year off to hone his skills at the Musicians Institute (Hollywood, California) where he majored in percussion and studied with greats Rob Carson, Donny Gruendler, Andy Megna, Jeff Bowders – an experience that he considers invaluable even today. On returning to Bombay, he began teaching at the Garodia School of Music with his Pulse Conversation band mates – Gino Banks and Vinayak Pol. Since then he has gone on to play with some of India’s biggest musicians and bands such as Indus Creed, Pentagram, Shaair ‘n’ Func and Bhayanak Maut, to name a few. He has also performed concerts and recorded with leading Bollywood artists like Amit Trivedi, Vishal-Shekhar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Kailasa and Pritam. Additionally he has played Indian fusion music with Rahul Sharma, Louiz Banks, Alms for Shanti and Niladri Kumar.
Recently, he was part of the band that headlined the successful Nh7 Festival with renowned producer Karsh Kale. 2012 saw the release of Indus Creed’s album ‘Evolve’ on Universal records. He has Collaborated with Artists Karsh Kale and Ram Sampath and featured on their episodes on the popular music tv show ‘MTV COKE STUDIO’ 2015 saw the release of Blackstratblues’ third album titled ‘The universe has a strange sense of humour’, The band performs this material frequently across the country .He is Currently writing new material and performing with Indus Creed and with Prog-Metal act Pangea. He has been collaborating live with music composer Amit Trivedi, while continuing with other live and studio projects as a sessions musician. Jai recorded drums with Music Composers Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy for the film Rock on 2.
Apart from Performing live with bands, Jai is a clinician and an educator and frequently holds Drum workshops around the country , teaching and mentoring up and coming drummers. Recently, he set up his own drum facility and teaches private lessons.
