Uday Benegal is one of India’s most acclaimed and influential independent musicians. Best known as the frontman and creative force of the pioneering rock band Indus Creed and the acoustic pop trio Whirling Kalapas, Uday has played a defining role in setting the stage for the country’s current exploding indie scene. With Indus Creed, Uday’s achievements have been manifold, including: – playing at Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival in the UK in 1993 – opening for Bon Jovi in 1995 to 50,000 people in Mumbai – collaborating live on stage with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash in 1996 – opening for the legendary band Santana in 2014 – winning numerous awards, including: o an MTV Video Music Award for their song “Pretty Child” o Best Band at the Jack Daniel’s Rock Awards in 2012 o Best Rock Artist at the Radio City Freedom Awards in 2013 o Vh1 India’s first ever Hall of Fame award in 2014 The veteran musician is also an accomplished producer, having composed and produced numerous advertising jingles. Additionally, Uday has featured as a guest producer on two seasons of the FoxLife music series Soundtrek, and mentored new talent two years in a row for the talent hunt series Ray-Ban Never Hide Sounds. He has also sung the Bollywood song “Life Is Crazy”, composed and produced by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for the movie Wake Up Sid. Along with his musical pursuits, Uday has writen for a number of publications, including the New York-based publications The Village Voice and Time Out New York, The Asian Age, Tehelka and Rolling Stone India. He is currently a regular contributor to ForbesLife, Man’s World and GQ magazines.
